I have a 99 gmc yukon Denali and the transmissions won't go into reverse and only 2nd and 3rd gears work. Almost like it's in some kind of limp mode? Does it need a new transmission or could it be something else?

@rickt7319 , Richard as a first step check the trans. fluid level, fill to correct level if low. Does the trans. fluid look dark or smell strong/burnt if it does there is probably worn parts internally. Some of the auto parts suppliers offer free code reading like Pepboys, Nappa, Advanced auto parts,etc and some of the guys are very knowledgeable and may have seen the issue of transmission often and put you on the right track if tranny codes are found..
There can be a few things causing the transmissions problem, plugged valve body, faulty solenoids, worn clutches, stripped sunshell spline, etc. etc.. You will have to have a good transmission shop have a look diagnose and estimate repair. If repair cost too high, another option would be a good used guaranteed transmission from a auto recycling yard. Check out the links below for more trouble shooting info.

Put a new transmission in a 01 Denali because it didnt go into reverse and still no reverse what could it be.
