i7 2.3GHZ won't power on after electricity went out at home.

Power went out for a few hours at my home. Mac Mini 2012 Server (i7 2.3 GHZ) now will not power back on.

1.) All other devices plugged into the surge protector still work, including my Thunderbolt Display.

2.) Purchased online, not original power cable. Tried the power cord from my Apple TV. Nope.

3.) Have tried outlets all over the house. Nope.

4.) SMC reset hasn't worked. Although I'm not convinced I'm doing it right. The instructions I've read (unplug, wait 15s, plug back in, wait 5s, hit power) seem too simple to reset the System Controller.

Haven't gone to Apple yet. Any thoughts before I pony up the cash for the Genius Bar?

Thanks.

At this point I think you'll need to take a gamble here and hope the power supply got the hit. Here is the IFIXIT guide to replace it: Mac Mini Late 2012 Power Supply Replacement and here is the part you'll need: Power Supply, 85W - Apple P/N 922-9563

Sadly surge suppressors can only go so far. You do need to make sure you don't over stretch the suppressor beyond what it can support. Basically, one system, display and a few low power devices thats it, use a different suppressor for anything else. Even then the suppressor also wears overtime each time it clamps on a voltage spike. So if you get a lot of power problems you'll likely need to replace it frequently.

Thank you. That is what I was thinking, but wasn't sure.

Also, thanks for the tip on the surge suppressor.

Cheers!

You may want to get a UPS if this is a common issue. Also see if there is any warranty on the suppressor. Many offer a warranty on any equipment damaged from their suppressor failing. Hopefully it can safe you a few bucks! ;-}
