Why is my screen going bright then back to normal?

my sony kdl-52xbr4 is acting up , its goes really bright and flickers , then all of a sudden stops . The duration of time it does the bright white and flickering is always different every time it does it. Then it will go back to normal with no telling of when its going to do it again , happens everyday.

camsimair could be loose connector/connection or a failing capacitor. Can you recreate this when you provide some tactile stimuli to the TV (slap it on the back to see if that creates the error)?

camsimair check all your cables first. Also try different inputs i.e. DVD, HDMI, PC, component etc. and see if that changes anything. If it does not then you want to take the back of your TV and take a look at the boards to see if the interconnect cables are all properly seated. Check the boards for obvious damage like leaking or domed capacitors. Post some images of your boards with your question. For that use this guide so we can see what you see.

Wow you are so informative I thank you in advance for your help , tomorrow I will post clear pictures of the boards with the backing taken off , to answer your other questions it does it no matter what setting its on , and hitting and manipulating the TV physicalally does not affect it .

@robertchildress possibly an issue with your backlight. Either the backlight itself of the power supply for the backlight, (failed PWM etc. are always a possibility. We really won't know until you open it up or it completely fails. If you can still adjust the brightness, you definitely want to decrease it to preserve your backlight strips
