I have just learned that the Logitech G933/935 gaming headset and and the Snow 2 HUD share the same voltage battery with the exact same connector. Unplugging the battery from the Snow 2 HUD can be done by removing the 5 T-6 screws and simply unplugging the battery (can be done without removing the snap ring holding the HUD arm). Then remove the right side cover of of the headset to reveal the user replaceable battery. Disconnect the battery, plug in the Snow 2 battery, charge the battery a bit then put it all back together.

Also, if you're not sure if your battery is dead just plug the headset battery into the HUD and see if you can turn it on. Hope this helps someone

by

Hi there,

how did you open the case of the recon? I just got the shielding glasses off, but not more…

Thank you Roman

by

Hey,

I have the same problem with my HUD.

And I'm about going skiing in a few days… :(

Why we just couldnt recharge the old battery???

by

Somewhat unrelated, but seems like it is impossible to find the Recon Uplink app? I cant seem to find my backup copy on the computer, would be really thankful if someone can upload it

by

Hi Thomas, You cannot download the app from the appstore. I guess intel will let the support die-out a little.

I pulled the app from a ios backup with imazing.

You can find it here..

hope this helps you out :-)

Hello. I have written a comment above, but it can be usefull for someone, that I write here as a possible solution (at least for App).

My goggles have a good shape battery (yet) and I have read so far, that the battery issue can be solved.

I propose my own solution for the App. I have found a site providing an app, at least for Android, with login: www.recom3.com . I will try it myself.

Best regards.

Hey it's awesome too see such work going on. However I'm sketched out by the need to pay any sort of crypto for a unknown project. Without any function.

Not to mention the requirement for BNB which most people would agree is a "shitcoin"

There are many things that scream scam to me about the website/lack of github/youtube videos.

I would love to be proved wrong with a video of it actually running on a phone connected to goggles but, I'm not about to drop 100 bucks on BNB for something i don't think is legit!

This gives me hope there is a possibility to making these functional once again!

by

Hello I agree with you at least someone is working in something the company has abandoned.

I can see two videos in their site, thats true.

Maybe the BNB is because they like to be discreet and anonymous imo.

I will try as I have said and post here the result asap.

by

Ok I had some bitcoin and after converting to theses BNB's, purchased and downloaded.

The software connects to the Goggles perfect. I have tested so far the music controls works.

I will try to upload a video, if I have some free time latter.

It also allows to look for friends. As soon as I can meet my friend, that has this same model, I will test it too.

by

Hello. I have very little time... but as promised:

https://vimeo.com/693217522

Dunno...maybe they are ex-employees

The say they will release the sources. Anyway I spend more in beers lol and now I can use the goggles!

by

Sounds really suspicious. There's a Github but files are pure garbage (templates). Maybe J. User own the site.

If they have a real solution, they just have to propose 1 month free trial... And then I'm sure there will be plenty of people ready to pay for this.

Hey these goggles are long dead support wise but I love mine so I’ll share what I can.

I was disappointed to find out that both support was dropped for the app and the goggle batteries where dead and wouldn’t charge because they where below the low voltage threshold. (2.8 Volts). They where plugged in via USB to the computer for ~2hrs with the voltage only slightly decreasing so I decided to replace the lipo with an 18650, specifically a Sanyo NCR18650GA

And %#*@ let me tell you the battery life has never been better. Seriously 2 full days of skiing and they weren’t even reading low yet. Temperatures where warm -5 so that always helps with battery life but the battery life is easily over double of previous. You do need to harvest the battery protection board as there is a signal wire.

Such a %#*@ disappointment to see such beautiful technology die because the software support dies, and even like 8 years ago when the snow2 released it was a concern people talked about and was one of the con’s of the snow2 vs the original MOD.

I wish they’d release the api, or open sourced the app so that people could run their own servers if wanted.

Honestly anything would have been better than the way intel handled it.

Hi Josh, glad to hear that your goggle are alive ;)

Would il be possible for you to describe how you changed your battery ? How you opened battery glued case ? Any trick ? Do you have a direct link to battery you purchased ?

Thanks a lot ! :)

by

Hey thanks for the comment Cedric. I used a hot air gun at 200c to melt the glue and pried the case apart, It was fairly destructive but I was also not patient, my thought process being that I could always 3d print a case if needed, if that was the route I wanted to go.

Any 18650 battery should work for this replacement. Sourcing those is heavily dependent on your local area but most vape shops carry them or ordering them online is always an option.

Hi - how can I chang the battery?

by

Hey Josh, thanks for the helpful info. Where did you house the battery? Those 18650s are way to big to fit the original housing...

ive carefully removed the Recon HUD battery from its glued in case and have ordered the same type of battery from Amazon. Should I remove this tiny circuit board and resolder it to the new LiPo battery connectors? I’m quite keen to dispose of the battery given how fiddly it was to remove the casing, just in case it decides to ignite!

Hey can you post the amazon link to the battery you bought? I’d also need one... also can you let us know if it worked? I’m still stuck here

by

Thanks for the swift response. I’ve ordered same mAh so will give it a try. The hud was detached but reconnected it now so I’m hoping the new battery will bring it back to life.

i have another set of Oakley Airwaves that I’ve used for a few years and picked this up as a project for a friend to hopefully use.

by

The battery is too long for the casing. I’ve ordered another one from somewhere else so hopefully that will be a better fit. I’ll send a link once I’ve checked it out.

by

Grif. I think the mini board off my old battery is faulty, should I be able to detect a current on the 3 wires going to the Snow2 HUD unit. Whilst the replacement battery is the wrong size for the casing I’ve charged it (using lipo charger) and connected it in place of the old battery. The power button on the HUD has no effect. Any suggestions??

UPDATE: it WORKED!!! I have bought a replacement battery from amazon. Just connected it (without molding, just duct tape) with the two existing electrodes on the board… let it charge for a while and PUFF, it turned on again!!!

Please help me find a new battery.

The original one is EVE 903041, 1200 mAh 3.7 V

I'm worried to order one bigger for the plastic case;

it' was not easy to open the case, but we did.

by

Can you provide a link to the Amazon battery that you purchased for the Snow2? I haven't been able to locate any links to batteries that are currently available AND are reported to work with the Snow2.

by

Hi, Would you please share link to battery you bought or dimensions ? Thanks a lot :)

by

Hi,

Have you been able to change battery ? If yes, would it be possible to share information (battery reference, how you connected new one, etc), thanks a lot !

Hi David,

it is a bit of a late responce, but i don’t think it is possible to change the battery on a Recon Hud or Snow2.

I think i read an artikel that you have to recycle the whole unit. As Intel has bought the company and stripped it down in june 2018 there is no support from Recon anymore. You could of course try to open up the battery case and replace the contence with a different pack.

The manual states it needs a 3.7v lithium polymer battery.

https://www.intel.com/content/dam/suppor...

Replacing this should be possible.

Good luck!

Olaf

Yes it is possible to replace the battery in the Snow2 / Recon MOD. Most batteries should still be good, but the issue is the battery goes below 2volts and the small circuit board does not allow the battery to charge once it reaches that point. You will have to crack open the battery case as its glued, find a small 3.7v li-ion battery and solder it to the battery contacts, then plug in the charger, leave it for around 20 mins, remove the small li-ion battery and you should then be able to plug in the charger again and it should start to take a charge.

Hi griff, i have the same problem... and i cant crack the battery case open. Do you think that if I cut the wires and re-wire to a battery like this it will work?

https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B00LN9T...

by

NO NO don't do that. use a small hammer and gently tap the end of the case all the way round, it will eventually crack where the glue is

by

Doing it the way Grif said works! Thanks

If you get the same mAh battery, then I would use the original circuit board and discard the one that come with the new battery, I have done many of them, as the recon HUD is used in the Oakley Airwaves

I found a battery that fits in the original casing. Problem is, once you manage to get off the old casing, you basically have to tape it shut again, there’s no quick snap back on.

Also, I tried just a straight swap with the battery I linked above… Problem is the same, if the battery charge is below a certain level, it will never recharge the battery through that circuit board. Lesson Learned, charge the NEW battery before putting it in!

Is it possible to use a 3.7v battery with higher mAh (with original circuit board). And will it be sufficient to charge the new battery with a lipocharger before installing it? And feedback is appreciated, a small tutorial or highlights of what NOT to do would be nice

You can pop the battery casing and bypass the circuit board to put a enough of a charge on the battery to get it to charge. Simply cut a spare usb charger and expose the positive and negative wires, tape these onto the solder points where the battery connects to the circuit board and let charge for a few minutes. Once the voltage reaches above 2 volts u can remove the taped on charger and continue charging normally through the HUD.

Playing a little bit of catch up here. Does anyone have a full solution? App, battery, etc.? Thank you!!!!

From my looking there really doesn't seem to be full solution. Battery replacement is definitely doable, but you definitely lose some of the sleekness depending on your replacement.

The real issue that has yet to be solved is the app requiring a login. I'm wondering if there's some way to fake the login certificate to any sort of functionality from the app but that's beyond my abilities, I'm more of a hardware guy vs software/networking. I know some people who might be able to point me in the right direction, but from my understanding the 2 options are either fake the login certificates or a new app from the ground up.

Hey guys super keen to do this myself but not sure where to start in disassembling the snow 2’s I’ve taken the lenses out but not sure what to do next to get to the battery. Could someone take me through? Thanks

You should be able to remove the recon unit completly from the goggles with just a little bit of fiddling, the wire on top has a few clips that connects the battery (on the left side of the goggles when its on your face) to the right side computer/display unit.

Getting the battery out of its casing is however much more destructive and required cutting into the plastic case, you could always just cut the cord and splice into it as I see no way to get the battery out without destroying the case, it appears to be plastic welded shut as even trying to pry around the seam will simply crack the plastic instead of nicely seperating the shell.

Let me know if you have any questions.

by

Thanks for the speedy reply. Seems like a longer project than just this eve so will set it on the back burner. Read further up that the battery case might be glued and able to be tapped with a hammer to separate after heating. Just looking to replace the battery so I don’t have to recharge every half day haha. Thanks again

by

Definitely worthwhile to replace I easily get 2 days of skiing of a charge with the 18650 I'm using now. If your determined (and maybe a bit destructive it can be done in 10 to 20 minutes with the right tools).

by

That’s great thanks once again. I don’t have that much exp soldering batteries and I noticed the one you’re using is a different shape to the one in the unit. How were you able to make that work? Apologies for all the questions.

by

Hi , I finally opened the case and I will replace battery this week. I gave 2 questions :

- I bought this replacement battery one year go, so it might be uncharged. I read in this topic that if battery is completely down it will boot. Is that correct ?

- when booted , will it require to connect to recon desktop app to use goggles or will it be in the last version before battery was down ?

Thanks

Anyone have a picture or instructions how to remove the whole recon unit so I can use the goggles as normal air brake goggles?

Depends on your goggles. With my snow 2 in my Smith I/O goggles they're just friction fit, the same as the battery and with some force and encouragement you should just be able to pull the unit out.

You're going to have a big gap on either side which will definitely let cold air and snow in if you eat it.

by

Thanks, I manage to just fiddle it out without tools.
