Before jumping down this rabbit hole it's a good idea to diagnose the problem.
I'm more likely to believe the fan has died so it's not cooling the system Vs needing new thermal paste.

Did you get your system wet or bang it?
You may want to get this app: TG Pro it should help you isolate whats happening.
