Trouble starting grand am after replacing bad fuel pump

I'm having this issue on my 04 grand am 3.1l v6, just replaced the fuel pump it was sitting about a year, now I have to use starting fluid to get it started and it takes it getting to temp to even idle right. I have to sit there and pump the gas pedal repeatedly for it not to stall and to get it to Rev up to about 2500-3000 rpms bc it tries to die. I didn't change the fuel filter after replacing the pump, what could be the issue

kokeman1987 , Change the filter as it could be causing a restriction, look for any pinched/damaged fuel line while you are at it. If still not starting properly, fuel pump should be tested with a fuel pressure gauge to make sure it is functioning properly 41-47 psi. I have seen new fuel pumps defective right out of the box.The fuel pressure regulator can also cause poor starting when they leak, see link #2. Good luck.
