Phone only charges when turned off, what needs repair?

Hi guys,

Was interested in repairing my iphone4. The phone works fine except it will only charge when turned off. Battery will hold charge, but it does nothing if plugged if I dont turn it off first. It will charge to 100% when turned off.

What part needs replacing?

Thanks,

Damhan

I would actually replace the charging port in this case because the phone turns on and detects the battery and the percentage reading from the battery is fine.

I have had this issue before and it always turned out to be the charging port that needed replacing.

OP: You already tried another charging cable and wall charger adapter right?

Yep I tried many chargers, I've ordered a battery and a charging port since the battery is probably tired anyway. I'll replace the battery first and if it still isn't working the charging port. May the best man win haha

This fixed it. But i'm replacing battery anway since it's tired and loses charge quite quick.

Yeah lithium batteries lose around 40% of their charge after being used heavily after 2-3 years.

The first thing I would try is a new battery. The iPhone 4 is old and if the battery is original, it is probably very tired. It could be losing capacity (current) at the same rate as it can accept a charge, hence why it doesn't charge when it is on.

Even a new battery takes longer to charge when it is being used.

It doesn't even say its charging when i plug it in if its turned on, but I'll give replacing the battery a shot. I'll let you know if it works, thanks for the suggestion.
