Mac Mini won't power on after SSD Replacement

Hi All,

I was hoping to find an answer here by reading through old posts, but so far I haven't come across an answer. Forgive me if I'm repeating something that's already been discussed.

Specs as follows....

Model: A1347

Mac Mini Core 2 Duo 2.4 (Mid-2010)

2 GB RAM

360GB (5400 RPM)

I recently purchased a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD and two Corsair 4GB (1066) RAM. A friend of mine just did this almost exact same upgrade (he has mid-2011 mini so used 1333 RAM) and had no issues.

I cloned the existing HD to the new SSD (have tried booting from it on another machine and it works perfectly) replaced the HD with the SSD, replaced the RAM, put it all back together again and it won't turn on. I get no chime, no fan sounds, no nothing. I do however, get a red light shining through the headphone jack.

Thinking the problem might be the new RAM, or something to do with the new SSD, I removed all new components and put back my old HD and RAM. Same issue. Could I have possibly damaged the Logic Board during the removal process? I was ever so careful, used all the correct tools etc. etc. I have also since removed the entire Logic Board to see if there is any visible damage and I can't see anything. I have checked and re-checked all connections and it all appears to be fine. One thing I did not do (which wasn't outlined here but I have since found in other threads) is use an antistatic wristband. Could that have done it?

Does anyone have any ideas? Any help would be so much appreciated! It's such a crappy feeling to think I might have nuked it. A slow mini is better than no mini; I'd go back to the old in a heartbeat.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Not sure here what happened. It's true you can zap things if you're not careful, now with winter coming on the air is dryer so static electricity is becoming more of an issue so proper ESD precautions do need to be looked at more carefully.

Lets try this put the logic board back in without the RAM or the drive. Connect everything up and power it up. Do you hear the fan or get any beeps? With a monitor plugged in do you see a folder with a question mark blinking?

Hi Dan,

Thanks for your help - I put everything back together, without the hard drive or RAM as you suggested. I'm still getting the little red light through the headphone jack, but nothing else. No beep, no fan, no signal through the monitor.

Are you sure you didn't damage the Power connecter? See if you pulled one of the wires out of the connector: Power connector

Well I'm not sure that I didn't damage it, although I would be really surprised if I did?! I was very gentle taking everything apart. I id check the connection and it appears to be connected properly.

If it isn't getting any power, where is the little red light coming from? The battery?

by

The connection offers multiple voltages over different lines which is why I was thinking one circuit was bad. If you feel it's not damaged then I would try a second power supply.

Sorry - not sure what you mean by that? A new cable? Or new power connector?
