apple appears at center of grey screen with spinning gear below. Bar below gear loads from left until about 1/8 and disappears. Just apple and spinning gear remain. Mac was slow day before with spinning beach ball. Tried unsuccessfully to load updates from apple web sight due to error. Tried to restart and that's as far as it would go. Grey sceen.

Insert your system installation disk and start up holding down the "C" key. Go to the second screen pull down menu to Utilities -> Disk Utility and see if you can repair your hard drive and permissions.

You have bigger problems than a corrupted system. You will need to open the back and look at the capacitors( look for corrosion and/or swelling), also the diagnostic LEDs to go any further. Please look on the bottom of your stand and give us the EXACT machine you are working on so we can try to direct you to the correct repair guides. Let us know the status of the LEDs on startup. Just to the left of the LEDs you may see two small buttons. One will reset the PRAM and the bottom one will restart the machine. Use this to start with the back off.
