mac takes several attempts to boot

When I turn on my computer, I hear the boot up sound but the screen is black and nothing happens. After forcing it on and off several times, it boots up normal and runs perfectly with no slowing down. I tried a smc reset. That didn't work. I ran a Apple diagnostics test. Nothing came up. I have no idea what to do or what to look for. What should I do? Will the solution require me to open my computer up?

I would start up from the repair partition by holding down the option key on start up and selecting the repair option. Run Disk Utilities. This failing then run the reinstall system installation. Next get a good anti-virus program like Symantec and clean any viruses off it.
