How to fix dents/scuffs in plastic

Block Image

Hello,

I am going to get a slightly water damaged 5c to fix, but its in pretty bad condition. the screen is cracked, but LCD fine. It has a few dents on the housing on it, but still works. how can i fix these dents? Would sanding the corners and then polishing it work?

@gigabit87898 , are you pushing the dents out of metal or plastic and the same as sanding is it metal or plastic, I will try to help answer your question.

@lpfaff1 It is the plastic

@gigabit87898 , Now that I see what you are dealing with, maybe just sand and polish and live with the small dent like imperfections, gouges like that normally get filled with a little plastic fill and sanded smooth, primed and repainted, probably more work than you want to do. Good luck with your device.

@gigabit87898 , Ok, plastic dent removal, must heat dented area(heat gun,carefully) and push dent with a blunt object(push on center of dent) when plastic hot and (hold till cool), you can over push a little but not too much. Plastic does have a memory so hopefully it will form nice and stay when cooled if not repeat heat and push again. Now as far as sanding, I am no sure how bad the scratches are but if bad maybe start with a 600 grit paper(wet sanding works best) then go to 800/1000/1200/1500 depending on how far you want to go. Then it is time to Buff/Polish , polishing pad on a drill will work with a little compound on the pad again keep it a little damp(not wet) and keep it moving to prevent over heating plastic.

Giga, if you are going to be doing these fixes quite a bit, there are headlight restore kits available consisting of all the materials you may need. I will post a couple of the kits for you to check out, along with a vid,s on them polishing a plastic headlight as it will be similar to what you want to achieve. Good luck.

I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

Thanks, I am going to post a pic in a few seconds. How do I push out on the plastic without removing the metal in the housing?

by

@gigabit87898 , I know this is a lot larger item then what you are working on but principles the same process. Heat gun on plastic bumper to allow dent to be pushed out vid, just use caution not to over heat plastic to melting point, you could experiment on old scrap plastic if available. Good luck.
