Why isn't my screen responding?

my iphone 5 screen turns on but when I tap it it doesn't register the touch. I've tried removing the screen protector and force restarting but the screen is still unresponsive. I even cleaned it with a microfiber cloth as I think this may have been caused by me running and getting my sweat in the case (i know gross) please help!

Screen been replaced before? If there is no metal plate shield covering the screen connectors the digitizer cable can become loose / unplugged when the phone is dropped.

Anyway most likely screen gone bad if touch screen not working at all.

Thank you for your help, my screen hasn't been replaced before but probably will try replacing it to fix the problem

Ben and Rayeasom make good suggestions. Your screen may have died from "natural causes".

However, I will focus on the water (sweat) side of things. You may want to open your phone to see if there is any signs of liquid. Follow this guide, keep track of your screws and always disconnect the battery. There are little white stickers inside the phone that turn red when they come in contact with liquid. This could come from a sweat intensive workout or it may be just a cumulative, long term thing and it suddenly decided to stop working...today!

Sounds like your digitiser has become faulty, you'll need a screen replacement, there are numerous guides on how to do this on iFixit and YouTube.
