Transmission shifted to neutral after third, now after second.

My transmission shifted into neutral after third gear all of the sudden. I was on my way home. A few miles later it would shift into neutral after second gear. I made it home by placing the shifter manually to second gear. Is this something that is an easy fix or is a new transmission the best way to go? The truck only has 80K miles on it and has no other mechanical issues other than the brake light comes on after sitting and kills the battery. I believe that is due to the switch associated with the actual brake pedal itself.

Check for codes if your seeing a p0500 or a p0720 then the speed sensors are to blame and replacing them will fix your problem . There are two and even if only one is indicated as bad it is best to replace both .Once one goes the other is usually doesn't last long. You may also want to check the fluid level . If the level is low look for a reason . Either leaking lines or transmission gaskets . Low fluid levels can also cause these kinds of problems. If neither of these are your problem then you will need to look at probably rebuilding or replacing the trans.

Fluid level is good. Where are the speed sensors located? The truck has been out of commission for a while and I cannot recall what my OBD scanner pulled up. I no longer have it of course and the fact I have to pull a lead off the battery when it is parked due to the brake light issue was resetting the codes.

rthe speed sensors are on the right side of the trans . the input speed sensor is usually towards the front close to the shift linkage and the output speed sensor is closer to the tailstock near the rear

you will usually have issues with the speedometer when output speed sensor goes
