Backlight not working after keyboard upgrade

Hi,

I replaced my macbook pro keyboard with one I bought from ebay. I assumed the backlight was separate from the keyboard (layer under keyboard) but now i'm not so sure as after I replaced the keyboard, the backlight doesn't seem to be working anymore. Does anyone know whether the backlight is actually part of the individual keys on the keyboard, or is it on the layer under the keyboard? The white sheet that is glued to the keyboard?

Thanks,

P

Just an update. Installed new used keyboard and backlight and my backlight wasn't working again so I moved the connector around a bit, blew around it and reinserted the connector and the backlight started working. I have a feeling that a bit of dust or something must have been impinging on the connection. Happy to say my macbook pro is 100% working again! 8 years and counting now! :)

The keyboard backlight is separate from the keyboard, and has an different connector. This connector is usually located just below the left fan, and it is easy to forget to plug it in, since the board usually sits on top of it.

Make sure you have connected this, as it is near impossible to damage the keyboard backlight, unless you rip the ribbon for this. Also, the backlight will only come on when dark enough, so cover the camera and it should come on.

Hi Reece,

Thanks for your reply. I hope I haven't broken the backlight! I accidentally got a tear on the bottom right hand corner (where the express card slot sits). The backlight strip tore a bit around there, and I'm not sure whether this would kill the backlight? Any thoughts? Is the whole sticky back panel to the keyboard one giant light or is the light concentrated towards the centre of this panel?

I'm pretty sure I put the connector back in but will double check when I open up my machine again to replace the keyboard again.

It sounds like you just ripped the black layer, which is fine. The lights are at the centre of the backlight (on the backlight, you will see a printed circuit coming from the cable) and this is distributed evenly with the other layers

Ah ok, yup I only ripped the black layer, not the circuit in the middle. No idea why the backlight stopped working in that case. Must be a loose connection. Thanks!
