The following is the status now: any charged battery will be recognized and will start up the mbp . Without a battery and only the charger, the mbp will not start. When battery is in and charger connected, it works fine. Coconut states that the 60w charger is recognized, but the battery is not charged.

Thumbs up to mayer

Will do, will have to find a charged battery first.

Coconut: Battery is fine, charger is 60 watts. Mac: battery not charging, powered by the charger / when charger is removed, Mac: powered by battery

by

Battery is not charged, drained empty, second battery, same result. Coconut recognizes the charger, but no charge flows into the battery. Also, wit no battery present, the charger alone won't power up the mbp or run it, when taking battery out.

I haven't heard of this problem, it could be the Magsafe port and the connection to the motherboard that is causing it to believe that it is charging. Since you did change the battery and it is older any warranty would be voided, I would reach out to Apple for advice. Try completely powering it off and disconnecting the battery connection and then re-connecting. Reboot, and see if that changes anything. Maybe try another set of batteries? Hope this helps.

Had replaced the original battery with a brand new one (partially charged) worked fine. Replaced it with a third used battery, recharged from a friends PB, worked fine as well, until depleted.

So is the issue resolved?

I would listen to mayer's instructions. They have more knowledge of the problem than I do. Best of luck!
