Resolve dust on my iMac fans

iMac 21.5-inch Mid 2010

Hi there,

I guess there is dust, o lot?…, on my iMac fans. Have been using smcFanControl but even that tool isn't able to get all the fans running properly, as a mather of fact it turns the speed of the optical drive fan to the sky… Other fan controle apps are useless, they can't get the fans moving. Probably dust is the reason, and which fan now is running it doesn't sound smouth… and stops now and then. My iMac is sort of overheating and this isn't safe and shouldn't be.

If i want to remove dust.. from the fans do i need to open my iMac and gentle blow all the dust away with use of a small compressor? If it is a dust thing of course. I prefere not to do, open, it is a lot of work i think and it needs to be done cautious and i am not sure if i am cautious enough..

What to do.

Any help is welcome!

Before we get into the dust, let's see if we can resolve the fan issue. Did you change the hard drive?

BTW - usually the more your house is vacuumed the dirtier your Mac will be. Frequent house cleaning causes dust particles to get suspended in the air and your Mac sucks it in and filters it. It always makes me wonder when a machine comes in and is pristine on the inside just how dirty their house is ;-)

Thanks for answering, but i hoped on a more clear answer.. What has the hard drive to do with it, which elements could cause the problem..

My girlfriend says i need to do more house cleaning, so i think you have your answer about a dirty Mac..

Anyway, thanks for replying.

Has the hard drive been changed? I ask because this can cause run away fan issues.

You may want to install this great app to monitor your thermal sensors & fans: TG Pro for less than $20 its well worth it!
