What can I do when my startup drive is failing?
My startup drive is failing. I have tried all of the troubleshooting hot keys (from this answer:My mac is stuck on the white startup screen!) when turning on and the only one I got a response for was the option key. It gave me the option of choosing the regular HD (mac HD) or the recovery drive.
First I chose the regular one and it began starting up then just turned off...
I tried choosing the recovery drive next praying I don't loose all of my files and it starts loading but only about 50% then stuck...
I updated my OS yesterday... this has happened to me before with updates but the trouble shooting hot keys have always worked before....
please help! I don't have any funds to take this into apple right now.

We really need to know exactly which iMac you have as there are known issues changing hard drives on several years worth of models.

honestly, it could be the hard drive itself.
