What causes battery to puff up and lose capacity?

Hello everyone,

Battery in my three year old became to lose capacity but after almost 400 cycles it didn't cause any concern to me. However soon it start to puff up in the middle - it increased it's hight considerably even trackpad stopped working from excess pressure.

Then I thought It was failure of used battery so I bought new one. Unfortunately after one month of using new one it's capacity reported by system decrease to less the half and it started to puff up again.

What can cause this behavior?

Will replacing left I/O, MagSafe board be sufficient?

Thank You for Your suggestions.

A lot of these machines had defective batteries. Looks like you got another one. This is a well know issue: http://blogs.consumerreports.org/electro...

Here's what I replace them with ( one year warranty): http://store.fastmac.com/product_info.ph...

If it's a genuine Apple battery, I'd take it to an Apple store, because they will generally replace defective batteries (even though the replacement program has technically been discontinued). Make sure to mention to them if the battery has been excessively hot, because that's one of the things they look for, but obvious puffiness and loss of capacity is usually enough for a replacement.

Thank you for Your answers, especially as they give me hope that logic board is fine.

Both batteries are genuine Apple Batteries. I'll try replacing at Apple Premium Reseller as I live in Poland were there is no Apple Store yet.

I'm not able to go there today but probably on Saturday I'll check wether they will accept complain and let know what I was able to achieve.
