Hold both the sleep/wake and Home buttons together for at least 10 seconds.

The red shut down slider will show up at the top of the screen and then disappear. Keep holding the buttons. The screen may even go black, but don’t let go of the buttons until the Apple logo shows up. When it appears, let the buttons go and the phone will start up normally.

What about a broken digitizer? "front panel was chipped below the home button" could that not lead to a broken digitizer?

by

yes I think you are correct my friend, I think I posted the hard reset as a first step and was waiting to hear back.. the next step would be what you have suggested oldturkey

For the touch screen, you can check wether the home button flex cable was too loose or what. If there are very dirty, you may need use a little alcohol to clear it and retry again.

Hope everything will goes well!

-1 the problem is the touch screen, not the home button.. none of your answers have been particularly good. or correct.

pollytintop, yes, I know it is the touch screen. But the home buttom flex cable too dirty or loose will influence the touch screen either.

by

You think dirt may lift the bottom portion of the screen up and lose contact?? I'm not sold but if it works then youre right and I apologise. Let's see..

by

-1 a dirty or improperly seated connector would not lead to a partially functioning digitizer.
