Apple MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.2 15" (SR) Specs

Identifiers: Mid/Late 2007, 2.4/2.2GHz* - MA895LL - MacBookPro3,1 - A1226 - 2136

I have a MBP late 2007 it works great, but 15 days ago it freezes and appear blocks on the screen :

It´s very strange when the blocks appear the MBP freezes and I have to force reboot. I have tried to change ram and the problem continue , then I decided to do a clean install of snow leopard and the problem disappeared during 10 days more or less and then it started again.

I have to say that I had a partition with windows since I have it , and when I decided to delete it the problems began.

I think that is problem of the hard disk because I have reinstalled snow leopard and the problem has disappeared but I would like know your opinion because I have passed all AHT without problems and when I check the hard disk with disk utility it appears to be well.

Thanks.

Connect to an external

display if the problem continues it's your VGC or Logic board... if they go away it's cables or LCD.

I think that the reinstall temporary cure was just a coincident not a solution.

There are known video artifact issues with some MacBookPros, may be covered under an extended warranty. Check your serial number.

Good luck,

This sounds very much like the Nvidia 8600 series recall machead3 mentions. The weird blocks on the screen.

I had one do this not too long ago, al thou mine was more severe. Apple fixed it.

I would make an appointment and take it in to the nearest apple store since they have to run their own test on it anyway to confirm the faulty nvidia GPU. (test only takes a few min) and you will have to leave it there anyway if they will be fixing it.

If the problem is intermittent you might want explain that and play a movie or something to push the graphics card if somehow it passes.

Anyway I would be surprised based on the questions description if the graphics card is fine.

Hi , again . I appreciated your replies. I have spent this afternoon replacing the hard disk for another one that I had here.

I think like you that maybe is the graphic card , but it´s very strange that when the problem appeared for the first time was few days after I deleted the window´s partition which was in NTFS ( I did a very weird instalation not the normal one in FAT32). Maybe when the hard disk wrote a file between NTFS and HFS this produced the fail. I dont know if what I m saying could be or not.

That´s the reason why I think that maybe is the hard disk because MAC OS cannot write in NTFS and that could create this kind of problems. And because when I reinstalled snow leopard I can do whatever I want and the blocks doesn´t appear again in many days. I think that if it was the graphic card the problem would appear in any case.

I will keep you inform about this.

Your machine has the Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT processor. Go here: http://nvidiasettlement.com/

I am not sure if you have connected the computer to an external display or not or what other methods of testing you have done in the past few days. I am sorry for making a redundant post since my previous comment I made says pretty much the same thing. I just would not want you to take more of your own time fixing/diagnosing something apple should fix for you for free, under a special recall for this problem. The video card on the motherboard isn't something you can fix.

If you make an appointment at the apple store, they can test it for you. It takes about 3min. to run a special test they have.

These kind of problems can be intermittent at first and get worse. So I would take the machine in with the hard drive installed while the problem you described is visible.

I had the same problem, except mine failed completely, and apple replaced the motherboard with a brand new one.

If it is not the video card recall issue, (i would be surprised) it would or should be easier to work from there to figure out what the problem is.
