This could be happening for a number of reasons. First, I would make sure that the temperature control dial is actually changing the temperature of your straightener. If it isn't, I would recommend replacing it. If the temperature is changing, but it just seems hotter than it is supposed to be, I would contact the manufacture to see if they can offer specific specifications in order to test the plates to see if they fall within these specifications. @tkfrick , Check and see if iron is still under warranty and return as defective for refund,replacement or repair. If your curling iron is getting too hot and the temperature control select switch/thermostat is not controlling the heat setting as it was before, the switch is probably faulty.

Replacement parts are available through the manufacturer's website, beauty supply stores, or online some times. Link to contact hot tools below. Good luck.
