How can you tell if pump is going bad?

Today my kenmore h3 washer gave me the code F02. I looked it up and found that it means drain problem. First I checked the drain hose and there was no blockage. Next I checked the pump filter where I found some rocks a wirde red rubber piece and a metal pin that could be part of washer or could be some wierd hair thing for all I know. I just recently bought the house and the washer came with it. So I cleanded the filter and the washer worked for 1 load. On the second load I got the f02 code again. Is it the pump going out. There is defiantly water getting down to the pump. The pump makes a humming noise not sure what kind of noise it is supose to make. I really dont want to buy a pump and have that not be the problem. Please help.

@bdrizzi Brandon, Humming noise may be pump not getting sufficient water to it because of plugged filter.

F02 error, check for these issues first again, drain blocked, hose kinked, drain filter plugged, or drain pipe exits too far above the washer, check drain pump filter for foreign objects, check electrical connections at the pump.

If the above does not correct the problem, check pump to see if debri is wrapped around impeller and can be cleaned, if not replace the pump. Check the attached link repair manual for your washer with trouble shooting.,instruction and guide, Good luck.

I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

@bdrizzi just to add to the good answer by @lpfaff1

F/02 error code potential causes

Check the drain hose and make sure it is not plugged or kinked

Check the electrical connections at the pump and make sure the pump is running.

Check the drain pump filter for foreign objects

If the above does not correct the problem replace the pump

I would start by taking the lower front panel off. There are two bolts, one on each side of the panel, remove those. Once you have the panel removed, you will see a white plastic unit, that is your pump assembly. You should also see a round plug with a plastic tab across the front. That is your coin trap. Open the cap by twisting it counterclockwise and remove it. It may just be clogged.

I have this exact washer, mine is 19 yrs old. I just replaced my second drain pump. It's almost definitely the drain pump! They are only about $35/$40 and easy to install so just get the pump at your local service and parts store and YouTube the video, you'll be glad you did and got it over with! ;)
