I used to have to have the lid on the bowl before the machine would start, but now I can press the on button and the blades will start to spin even though the lid isn't on. I am worried this could be dangerous.

If your device runs without all the components in place, the safety feature is most likely damaged. The safety switch only allows the processor to work when all of the components are in place. The safety feature works by a spring mechanism in the work bowl which activates an electrical switch in the processor's housing.
You will need to either replace or fix the safety switch. See the Cuisinart DFP-14BCN troubleshooting page for further information on the safety switch.
