New 1TB drive reads as 7.3TB

I installed a new samsung 1tb drive in our early 2006 20" imac. I purchased the original 10.4.4 install disks and disk utility reads the drive as 7.3tb and won't allow me to erase or partition the drive. One rabbit hole I went down said to just use 10.5 or 10.6, but everything else I've searched says you need the original install disks that the computer came with. Can I do 10.5 or 10.6? Is 500GB the max in this model?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

We really need to know your exact machine as the Early 2006 machines used Core Duo processors and the Late 2006 used Core 2 Duo CPUs.
