iMac boot problem, no chime, no usb, what to do

Imac 27i EMC 2429

My iMac suddenly won't boot anymore. When starting up you can hear the normal drive spin and short hd 'chirp' but then nothing. It does not produce the startup chime, so something must be wrong with the hardware. My usb devices do not get power either (as they don't light up), so I cannot get to a hardware test or anything. Removing the memory gives the 5s no memory beeps.

How can I figure out what is wrong with my iMac? I have built a dozen computers myself so I am not afraid to open it up. But is there much that can be done without having spare parts around?

I would prefer to order the failing parts and replace them myself, but I cannot just order every part to try them out.

So what can I do?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

First disconnect all added devices.

Try an SMC reset:

SMC RESET

Shut down the computer.

Unplug the computer's power cord from both the wall and computer.

Wait 15 seconds.

Attach the computers power cable.

Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.

Hi Mayer,

Thanks for the input. I tried a SMC reset, but still getting nothing. And without keyboard or screen, kinda hard to figure out whats going on.

My machine indeed does have a AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5. It's the 3.1ghz with videocard upgrade.

I assume the videocards are a known issue then? Is that something that can be repaired (also @ home?)?

If Apple will no longer honor the recall, the GPU can be reflow on a hot air work station. In my experience there is about a 70% success rate with this procedure.

Thanks a lot for your feedback. I contacted apple and after three different people they offered to repair the videocard under recall warranty! (now I just hope it really is just the videocard that has issues!)

So Im off to bring the mac to the repairshop!

That's great, I was afraid they might says the program had expired.
