3DS won't turn on but will charge

Hi all,

I'm new in to the repairing of devices but I want to fix a 3DS that I bought from an auction site. When I received the product it would not power on, it would charge however and so I let the 3DS charge until it was full of electronic juice.

After a few days I tried to power up the 3DS and it was like a small miracle happend: It booted up. However it was quite clear that there was a problem with the Wi-Fi board. I reconnected the Wi-Fi board and it looked like the problem was solved. But suddenly the 3DS shutted down with a small popping noise. It hasn't turned on since (also no blue power on light), however I am still able to charge it.

A few scenario's were going through my head:

- The ribbon cable for the speakers broke. Personally I don't think this is the case, because the Nintendo 3DS won't even power on when the screen is almost closed.

- A fuse or capacitor has been blown on the motherboard. I cannot find any evidence of this on the motherboard. Also I think that it's strange that I can still charge the device if a fuse has been blown up. (I have opened up the 3ds and measured the fuses with a multimeter, they gave 0,05 back (on 200 ohm's) looks like me that they should be working.

- The battery is dead. This is also possible, but I find it strange that I'm still able to charge it (I have read stories about problems with the battery and that they could only charge it for a few seconds). (Put in a replacement battery, it didn't fix the problem)

- The game cartridge reader has some problems with it's connectors (see picture: https://s17.postimg.org/cf77n541b/DSC_09...

). I really don't know if this could be a problem which could result in a short circuit.

I am hoping that an expert on this forum could help me in order to sort the problem. I have already order a new battery and ribbon cable (just in case).

Thank you in advance!

Answer this question I have this problem too

Small update about the situation.

@rogierr look slike some corrosion on the EMI shield and the connector. Remove the shield and clean the board with some isopropyl alcohol. Then repost some good images so we can see what you see.

@oldturkey03 Thank you, I will buy some isopropyl and clean the board with it.

@oldturkey7 The whole motherboard has been in a bath of isopropyl for the night, some of the corrossion has come off, some of it is still on the connectors. So I have put it back in to the bath of isopropyl and will let it in there for the weekend.
