How do I install OS 10.3 on new MacBook HD?

Have a MacBook Core 2 Duo Late '06. Installed a new hard drive. Attempting to install OS 10.3 with black install disc (I do not have the gray factory disc). I get the flashing question mark when I hold "C" key @ power up and gray screen when I hold "option."

When I insert a MacBook Pro disc (gray) I can see the new HD via Installer > Utilities > Disk Utilities. But "can not install on this computer."

Is the black 10.3 installer which requires a previous version of OS 10 to work? Do I need to format my new HD? If so how?

Thanks very much in advance

Thanks for the replies. Called Apple, ordered installer, 10.6.

$17 ... not bad. This should work. Again, I appreciate the help.

As far as I know a Mac will not operate on a system lower than it shipped with (classic environment excepted). The first MacBook shipped with 10.4.6 so the 10.3 will not load. You may still be able to buy the original installation disks from Apple for $15. Call 800-SOS-APPLE and request it. The gray disks will only install on the specific machines they were made for.

The original OS in your computer was 10.4.8 causing me to believe you are having a firmware problem and will not be able to install a OS that old on your computer.
