screen won't come on when phone rings, call out anytime, stays hot, won't let me set up voicemail, drop calls, wont ring when I get a call most of the time. \may \I get another phone that works, or should I go with another free phone company?

How long have you had the phone?
There is a 12 month warranty on the phone. Verify the purchase date and if the warranty period is still valid, consult the warranty documentation that came with the phone (or go to the manufacturer's website to find out) as to what you have to do to get a warranty repair or replacement.

nannie, it sounds like you may need a more user friendly phone, If some one is offering you a free phone as replacement make sure they explain how to use it and show you how to set it up and use the features you want to use.
