Laptop turning on but screen stays black

When I turn on the laptop the power button lights up and I can hear fan noises, but the screen remains black.

I have tried the hard reset - removed battery, unplugged and held down power button etc - and this worked yesterday and the screen came back on, but then had the same problem again after turning off the laptop and turning it back on today to use it.

After trying the hard reset again today, the laptop tried to do updates, before the screen went black again at around 25% complete. The screen will now not turn on again.
