will not cut on now

i recently had to replace my sons touchscreen and after it wouldn't start up. after trying different things i ordered a replacement battery and it started right up. But after that i started charging it before i noticed a paper that says to let die first then charge. i thought i'd just unplug and use til it died then go back to charging. well after it died it never came back on. i resat connector on battery and tried to restart phone and it popped up the battery charge picture with 3 red bars and then it went off and will not cut back on. i also held the home and top button to get it to start too and that didn't work either. it just seems dead. did me charging it before letting it die kill the battery? it was working just fine after i replaced the battery. he could play games and call his mom, but now nothing.
