Steven, cartridges should be OEM/ HP cartridge as a lot of aftermarket cartridges will not work. Try removing and reseating cartridges again. Make sure the carriage latch is closed properly. Try cleaning the copper contacts on cartridge with soft cloth. Unplug printer from power, wait a minute plug back in to reset.

Check the trouble shooting link below for more detail. Hope it helps.

Most of the out market cartridges will not work with each and every printer prefer to use original cartridge first.

Now clean the copper contacts of the cartridge thoroughly.

Insert the cartridge now and push each cartridge inserted until you hear a click sound.

Close the door properly and wait till the printer heats and silent.

If cartridges not detected restart the printer.

From printer display select for advanced options by using buttons to navigate.

Press right arrow button till you receive restore settings.

Press OK button to restoring process.

Printer will restart and you can now check the cartridges are detected and ready for printing.
