MacBook Pro won't turn on - has my logic board finally gone?

Hello all,

I was having lots of problems with my Macbook crashing a lot. Seriously a lot. Had someone take a look at it, who suggested it might be the hard drive cable (a common fault on this model?). So i took the opportunity to give it a bit of an upgrade, and installed an SSD and upped the RAM. All worked fine afterwards, but did not really experience as dramatic an increase in performance as I might have hoped for. And it kept crashing. Perhaps slightly less, but still way more than I'd like or than it should. There seemed to be some connection with the wifi, and i never really got to the bottom of it...which is by the by now, as now it has died.

Battery charges, and is fully charged. When I press the power button it starts to power up - hard drive makes noise, optical drive makes noise and activity, fan spins, white light on front comes on...and that's it. No further. Eventually it powers down and turns off.

Having read through this thread: No boot. Black screen. No chime..

I followed the suggestion of powering up with no RAM - and I did get beeping sounds with no RAM. I have also tried swapping the RAM around, which made no difference.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received. I am fully prepared for it to be the logic board - 6 years isn't bad I guess, considering how quickly some people's have packed in. But would love to explore other options if there are any.

Thanks for reading, and for any help offered.

Well, you did not say that you had replaced the cable. SSD drives don't make noise (no moving parts), if yours does, somethings wrong. I prefer the 2012 hard drive/IR cable for a replacement.

I replaced the cable when I installed the new drive.

By makes a noise - i mean it has clearly powered up, rather than a whirring noise like an HDD. But the problem seems to be bigger than the hard drive. Even if the hard drive and/or cable had completely packed in, I'd still at least get as far as the chime, no?

Zap the PRAM:

Here’s how to reset your PRAM:

Shut down your machine. Yes, all the way down, not sleep or logging out.

Press the power button and then press command-option-p-r. You have to make sure you get those keys pressed before the gray screen comes up or it won’t work.

Hold those keys down until your Mac reboots again and you here the startup chime.

Let go of the keys and let your Mac reboot normally

Thanks. Forgot to say I already tried zapping the PRAM, and resetting the SMC.

With regards to the PRAM instructions - I have no 'grey screen'. It deosn't get that far. There is no activity on the screen, and no chime, with or without PRAM zapping. Just a general powering up, some optical drive whirring, fan spinning, which repeats a couple of times, then after a few minutes it powers down completely by itself.
