Can an iMac with snow leopard OS work with a newer iMac El Capitan OS? or will I have to have the same OS in both machines to network back and forth?

It seems to me it will work using a FireWire. If it won't work , it will tell you. If it will, there could be some minor differences but it will tell or lead you through the process.

Ed, what I mean is when you have two iMac's using different versions of OS 10, and you plug them together, will you be able to transfer files back and forth? or must they be using the same OS version?
