MacBook Pro makes startup sound, but screen stays black

This is a weird issue I'm having. The machine makes the startup sound, but I don't have a way of knowing if it's on or not. Usually after an extended period of time (30 mins or so), if I press the power button, the screen will come back on and I can log in as usual with no issues. So I can't restart the computer or turn it off unless I want to go through that process again. Is there anything I can do to fix this, without having to turn it in for formal repairs?

does it boot from an external recovery disk? Have you ever attempted any repairs or somehow damaged it?

I haven't tried booting from an external recovery disk. I haven't attempted any repairs myself either.

Take it in to an ASP and have there test it for this free extension program:

Ah, I didn't know this was a thing! I'll try it out. Thanks!

An ASP has financial incentive to help you rather than taking it to Apple. They put it on an internet test with Apple to verify that you do have the issue.

shine a torch at the centre of the screen, it needs to be about an inch away and look for the picture of the file or logo or ?. If you can see it it will mean the bulb / backlite that lites up the screen has died.

I tried it, and couldn't see anything. Would the bulb be dead, even if the screen comes on after a while?

Gary, I have similar issue. when i shine torch, I can see my whole screen is there. Other issue is the keyboard lights go on and off. Also bottom of computer gets hot in upper left corner. This was all from an overnight drip on my desk. I need to look up how to change bulb/backlight. Any other suggestions?
