My laptop powers up, but the screen is black.
Is this a good question?

My laptop powers up, but the screen is black.
Hook up an external monitor to determine if you have a motherboard or LCD problem. If the external monitor works, the trouble is with the display or its cables. You should also confirm that your memory is properly installed, and you may want to replace your BIOS battery. I have included a link to disassembly instructions for your unit. Good luck.

by Bryan Dizon
the "shift, F8 & power" works sometimes; however, apparently the black screen of death is an inherent anomaly in the Toshiba Laptops motherboards. I took mine to a PC repair shop, the guy opened it up and used a heat gun (blower) to heat up the CMOS chip and it came on, he advised it will turn on but eventually it will dye again. I love TOSHIBAS; however, I just spent couple of hundred $$ on a new (refurbished) board AND new hard drive AND I still have the same problem.
by miguel C
The shift/F8and power button just worked for me too. I paid a repair place $50 two weeks ago to "fix" the very same thing!

someone told me Toshiba had this kind of problem more than any other brand, is that true?
by Allan Ly
Try unplugging the cable on the back of the LCD itself and plug it back in, simple, now you'll have a working LCD display again, I've done this to seven of theses Laptops and it works.
thank you Di....it totally worked you rock :)

My laptop loads up but gets stuck on a black screen before i can put my password in to log on. Does anyone know what to do to get me to login. Thankyou.
by jamespeck92
Open the LCD, remove the main cable to the LCD and clean the contacts and replace the cable, add another strip of tape to secure the cable and you should have a working display.
Amazing, can't thank you enough!!

The Shift, F8 and the power button at the same time worked. Thank you ! You guys are awesome. My laptop is updating.

READ THIS PLEASE :(
Hello Guys. I appreciated the solution you suggested. But it didn't work on me. I did all the possible solutions(getting off the power cord and battery then pressing 1-2 mins; doing the ram thing) but the laptop' screen is just black and empty. I am very nervous because I am using my cousin's laptop and I don't want to tell him that his laptop gets damage because of me. Please what will I do now. I also try to open the laptop. Can you please tell me what to do when I open the laptop? By the way the laptop's model is Satellite. Please help me guys I'm really nervous. Thanks.
What if the keyboard no longer works? I have been using on-screen keyboard until the laptop screen stopped working. I tried unplugging and taking the battery out and etc. I have no problem seeing the power light on and battery charged. Any suggestions?
It's because your laptop ram crashed .. change it and it will be work fine

It worked for me! Thanks!
Thank you Kris Patel. Shift + F8 + Power wasn't working for me, so I checked the RAM, it looked like it was seated properly, but just to be sure I reseated it. I made sure it was firmly perfectly in place. When I turned it on Shift + F8 + Power didn't work the first time, so I shut it off and did it again. I pressed and held for about 2 seconds and then let go, the screen came back on.
Am abc why if it don't work at all
Taking battery out worked for me today.
yes - after three tries it worked. After it did not work the first time, I took out the battery the second time but obviously did not wait long enough. The third time I took out the batter, counted to 30, then put it back in. Then did the Control F8 "On" buttons together. And it finally worked. My computer had been dead for over 2 months (not pugged in) so that is probably why I had the problem.

Hi, battery out and in shift+f8+power works until i restart then starts over again... any other suggestions?
by Cole Tutton
Cole, I had this problem months ago and I had to complete the process a number of times before it was all good. Patience. Once it was totally back, it stayed fixed. good luck.

Still the monitor is black
by Bandula
The "black screen of death" is usually very easy to repair on a laptop. First, turn your computer off by pressing and holding down the start button. Next, unplug the computer and remove the battery. Press and hold down the start button for about 60 seconds. Release the button and plug in the computer. Press the start button and the display should return. Replace the battery. If this does not work, try it again up to four times. Getting no results usually indicates a bad motherboard. I hope this helps.

Ex. It sounds like vrooooommm_____pause for a sec____vrooom continuiously and the laptop doesn't start up?
It maybe something on the motherboard maybe?

by Hla Aung
absolutely brilliant fix. thank u. fixed on the first try.
by thinadoo
Thanks brother, I thought my laptop was finished, your fix worked first time.
by brian kearns
I DID IT I GOT THE SOLUTION!!!
Step 1: Unplug the AC Power Cord. (Charger)
Step 2: Remove the battery.
Step 3: Hold the power button for 60 Sec.
Step 4: Grab a handy tool (Such as as hammers or crowbars.) and take three steps back.
Step 5: After taking three steps back SMASH THE LAPTOP WITH THE HAMMER.
Step 6: Repeat.
CAUTION: DO NOT DO THIS WHILE KIDS ARE AROUND. (PARENTAL GUIDANCE IS ADVISED.)
So this issue is caused by a bad battery? My laptop is also having issues with a few main letter keys that barely work. I was looking into replacing the keyboard until this happend with the screen.
I had the same problem. Nothing was working until I came across a button (fn). Apparently if accidentally pushed it can switch screens. I pushed it once and it worked for me.
Does not work for my Toshiba. How does pressing the power button with no power and no battery have an affect?

Hi, I opened my vaio laptop & clean fan, cpu, and now turn on pc, power light is on, fan is workinh but black screen and display is off, recheck evry thing but not found any thing, whats wrang? Help me plz
by muhammad hz
Does anyone know how to help me out to fix a problem with my TOSHIBA laptop. The problem is that the screen is black when switched on, the fan still works and same for the CPU, but this was caused by me changing the Priority for the process: "explorer.exe" to Realtime and the explorer.exe process became very "laggy" and I couldn't do anything, so I switched off the laptop and switched it back on again and it wouldn't boot up. I've tried plugging in a External Monitor, but nothing happen, I tried every tip including the one at the beginning of this topic and still, nothing happens.
Can anyone tell me if the motherboard is not working or if it's an everyday thing that most people would do by mistake? Thanks

For those of you with a laptop that does not have a removable battery, this might help. Hold down the power button to shut off the computer, but DON'T TAKE YOUR FINGER OFF THE POWER BUTTON. Hold it there for about 60 seconds more, and then remove your finger. Then, press the power button again to turn the computer on. I did this, and it worked for me :)

the one by oldturkey above worked for me! :)
by neil
Did a lot of searching, and by crikey oldturkey's one worked for me too just now. Seems bizarre, almost like voodoo, but this seemed like the easiest solution from all the other ones I found to try.
Note: my wife pulled the battery out and it still didn't work, but I followed those instructions exactly and it's perfect now first time!
I thought it might be over for my laptop but I tried what oldturkey03 suggested and it worked on my first attempt. If you still check this post, thanks a bunch oldturkey03.
Monkies4kids
oldturkey03's method worked perfect for me. However, the windows seems to have a problem loading up, the system probably fell. Installed a new copy and is working fine now, thank you.
by amr ossama
I did as above old turkey o3, worked first time, I had been working on my daughters toshiba for a few hours went away , came back and blank screen. Even after forcing shut down still nothing. Wtf?! What a bunch of self-gratifying spam comments. It's just a LINK that leads to another thread, which contains a comment by the person (mentioned BY NAME in every single comment above) that doesn't even have anything to do with tech support... Why would every person commenting, mention the OP by username? Stupid and fake.

I don't have a removable battery but holding the power button in for 60 secs worked... thankyou!
I also have this type of problem where power on the screen is blank or black.

It works for me.
Try it and give feedback.

Stupid question what is a Function key
I got my laptop back 3rd time round. 1. was screen 2nd was motherboard 3rd was Harddrive. After putting everything back into Toshiba Laptop everything seemed fine until I switched it off. Later when restarting keyboard lit up but screen black. I tried all the methods above until FN F5 idea and it came to life. 1 thing is for certain...Toshiba Satellite is a dud or I was unlucky to get that 1 oddball that just gives problems. mustve been the laptop that was last job on a Friday knockoff. cheers K49 AMBO.

nothing worked for me. Only time i get it to work is to remove heatsink replace paste and heat with hair drier before i put it back together. Works for a while then i turn it off and when i come back t turn it on it is blank screen but making noise as if working.
by anyy1
..been doing the F8 routine at start up and everything worked fine, however, in the last couple weeks I've noticed a flickering that occurs which is sometimes a precursor to the screen blacking out.

Can it work for all types of laptop or just toshiba?
I have a small electronics repair shop out of my home and just yesterday checked in a third Toshiba machine with this same problem: failed GPU. Cause: overheating.
Each owner has said the same thing: over the past few months, every once in a while the screen stayed black during boot-up, but a restart or something similar like removing the battery, letting it sit overnight, or power-cycling made it boot correctly. Eventually nothing would help and they brought their laptops in for repair.
On the first machine I had to troubleshoot for quite a while before determining the issue, including everything mentioned here in this thread, until finally deciding to replace the mobo over re-soldering the GPU (which I incorrectly assumed was my only option). On the second unit I reflowed using a hairdryer, followed by my kitchen oven. Big job. Didn't want to have to do that with this machine, so I'm borrowing a heat gun tomorrow and using this procedure found on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cP2QOXNM...
(Warning: rated PG due to mild cursing)
This is a known issue with the laptops in this line and while one of the other suggestions might work and solve your specific problem, be on the watch for the graphics to eventually die due to dust and/or heat buildup in the future. It's HIGHLY recommended to use a cooling pad under these systems (some of the Toshiba User Manuals even go so far as to tell you that you NEED to use one rather than just SUGGEST it.) and to periodically tear-down and clean out the inside around the heatsink, fan, etc. You'll find the dustier or dirtier your normal environment, the more often you'll need to do it---at least twice per year is a good start, especially if you own pets that shed.
If you would like a copy of my t-shoot list to rule out all the other possible problems that can cause the black screen of doom, message me and I'll be glad to share it. Otherwise, assume your machine needs the gpu reflowed and don't trash it!
The hard disk, OS, screen, etc. are all still fine and in working order (unless you've inadvertently pressed the appropriate keys and don't something to the bios or something weird like that.)
IMO, Toshibas are good machines. I still have my original with Windows 95 on it! I own several models and have found, with the proper maintenance, that they'll last well past 10 years. (Believe it or not, I've found that Dells and Acers are the next best performers among abusive users. LOL.) Every manufacturer has weaknesses: none are perfect. Don't expect to not have issues with electronics because you'll always end up disappointed. Heat, dust and mishandling are the three biggest killers.
Good luck - I hope this helps some of you.

Something funny - my own very very dim screen problem problem turned out to be Toshiba's eco setting which set brightness to 1. I had accidentally pressed a button that switches it on. The display is so dim it looks off, unless you shine a flashlight on it. Connecting to external display and undoing the eco setting solved it.
This was post Windows 10 though, I'm posting it here in case it helps someone.

The problem is much more simple in my case after long time boot with black screen in windows 10 toshiba satellite: problem is with graphic card driver, usually after install windows graphic card driver is allready there, in my case amd radeon hd, but windows ask you on install to dual monitors graphic card, all of us maybe check yes. In Device Manager I disabled in Display Adapters this Dual Monitors adapter, remaining only simple amd driver and display boot on restart very fast. Check your graphic device!

The monitor and keyboard on my 4 year old Toshiba Qosmio X75 Laptop would not turn on.
Here are a few things that I tried...
1. Press the F4 button (or FN+F4 keys simultaneously) to switch to external monitor and then again to switch back to the laptop monitor.
2. Press the Window key and the P key simultaneously, as per the manual's troubleshooting suggestion.
3. Unplug the power cord, remove the battery, plug in the power cord, press and hold the SHIFT/F8/Power buttons simultaneously (a quick press during the first attempt and then I held them for over a minute on the second attempt).
4. Press and hold the power button for more than a minute.
5. Remove the cover on the bottom of the laptop, remove the RAM memory cards, and put them back in to make sure they are seated properly.
This one fixed the problem...
6. Replace the CMOS battery (a CR2032 coin cell lithium battery). After four years of use, the old one was completely dead.
Hope this helps!

by Tom Brasser
If the display is off, but the power light on the laptop is on, and the HDD light is staying off. You have incorrectly seated ram. It does not matter if it looks right, if the RAM is more than 0.2mm out on either side it will cause the exact situation I just described in almost every laptop. This is technically called a failure to POST. Where everytime your computer powers on it does a POST check which checks for functional vital components eg PSU(Battery),RAM,CPU,GPU, and if they all report in to be able to do their job. You see your asus, samsung or whatever boot logo :)

When I did that my screen is still black
by Lucas Chen
Yes indeed the fix ""battery out, shift, F7 & power button at same time did the job, but after you power it down it goes back to the same problem, what I have found that helps is letting the laptop get hot (powered up with the black screen) for about 20 minutes then it will work; I've been lucky for the past couple of days the unit powers up without any problems. For people that are not familiar with the internal components of laptops, ""DO NOT TRY TO TAKE IT APART"" you'll most likely damage it without even noticing your blunder. Crack open the piggy bank or take out the plastic and PAY the PROS to do the job, just make sure you get a guarantee.
by miguel C

Acer aspire - started with the black screen thing last night ,had to keep pressing "fn" and f6 to get the screen up for about 5 secs then black again. Was about to spend my whole day trying to figure this out when I found your post!! In short....I Love you!! Lol , If I had lots of money I would now be sending you bountiful gifts from around the world as a thank you ,I'm that relieved!!! Thank you so much..... THE DAY IS MINE!!! Please note you should press 3 keys after replacing the battery as for some reason even though I read the post I only pressed power and f8 on the first go as this can become a habit if you are used to putting the computer into safe move.......Don't forget the "SHIFT".

I tried to turn it back off, and the beeping sound continued and it wouldn't turn off. I had to take out the battery to make it stop. I was afraid it would like, blow up or catch fire or both. Ahhh

74% of the time, the issue is the connection in the LCD, pull the cable off the connector clean the connections with a little deOxit5 on a Q-tip™ then clean and re installed the connector, it's as simple as that, saves $$$, try it..

Same problem- dark screen but you can hear it start up. Removing battery and pressing f8/shift/power didn't do anything but shut it off. It's over 6 years old how sad! Is it worth taking it to get looked at or is it dumpster time!

my Toshiba Satellite turns the two green lights on, but the 3rd green light hard drive indicator light, does not light, and the screen does not turn on ...I do not use a battery, I use the power chord only. I tried the f8 to no avial, it won't go into safe mode.
Today after 10 or more attempts to turn on this computer it the monitor finally came on. I checked the new hard drive to insure it is in properly, I removed it and reinstalled it. Anyone have any ideas to what is going on..thanks for you help.

Persistence pays off here. Did the power off 60 second deal, removed the battery, started Shift F8 power, got 1 second flashes of Toshiba start screen, over the course of 2 days did it nearly 30 times before it took off to where I could run safe mode and run system restore. I am now a God in my wifes eyes. Thanks to all.
by Dan Redmond
Had this same problem, but I noticed it happened after I had bumped the laptop, so I thought it must have disconnected something.
I have the Toshiba C55 Series - not touch screen.
Sure enough I went online to see how to replace the screen see here on you tube; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=796OM-3G...
Turns out the connector had slipped partially out follow the you tube check the screen connector on the back of the screen! Push in like he says - worked perfect after I put back together - don't be afraid it's very easy!

It worked. Thank you so much!!!!!!!! I was so worried I had lost all my information for work and I am an attorney so that isn't good. I have backup storage but am currently out of town and did not have it with me. You have saved my life as I have a deposition first thing tomorrow morning. Thanks again.
by laryhuff1

My toshiba satellite L355d, I did all of these suggestions, including reseating the memory, reseating the hard drive, blew out the dust from the heat sink area, hit the f8 , shift, power on buttons. The problem is when I turn my computer on EVERYDAY the monitor and keyboard is inactive. That is probably why when hitting all the suggested keys to fireup the monitor, nothing worked because the keyboard was dead. Now what I found that seems to work lately for me, is to turn on computer, turn back off, turn back on andif still if the monitor isn't working, then I just leave the computer on to get hot. After about 20 to 30 minutes with the computer still in the on position, I turn off the computer twice and on the second attempt the monitor FINALLY comes on.
by toggers55
This happens constantly and i always end up restarting the entire computer. Is there something specific i am missing? .......im really getting tired of having to re download all my apps

..been doing the F8 routine at start up and everything worked fine, however, in the last couple weeks I've noticed a flickering that occurs which is sometimes a precursor to the screen blacking out.

Take the battery out, after a few seconds, put it back again. Then press Shift + F8 + Power buttons simultaneously (ie, Press these buttons all at the same time). Hope your problem will get solved, and your laptop should hopefully switch on immediately.

I have an A305. None of the above worked for me. After months of having on again/off again problems, it turned out that many times when I dusted the keyboard, I had inadvertently pressed F5 which has a little picture of the screen on it, and turned it off. Press F5, if that doesn't work press it again using the FN key at the same time.

Thanks

I just my Toshiba Laptop which was "Black Screen" (NOT DISPLAYING) working again by following the steps
*Turning off the Laptop
*Unplug the power or Charger
*Remove the battery
*Plug in the charger, Turn it on again then Shut it Down by pressing the Start key + power button
*Release them and Hold down the power for 60 sec
*Turn it on again
by Hughes Joel
...well, after about a year of this procedure working well seems the display is finally shot as it blacks out only moments after booting up. Spent about an hour trying to coax it to stay on but no success. Granted the system is almost 12 years old. The HDD and everything else still works so I have to find some way to extract the files I need. Not sure how this could be fixed without a lot of expense, more tha the system is worth.

Did not work for me
by Debbie Canady
Hey, glad you was able to resolve the issue, no one wants to power up there desktop/laptop to find a blank uninhabited screen. I myself got into repairing desktops/laptops about a year ago now and i know it can be a daunting task but I was really helped through the process with the help of an online course and saved myself a ton of money by not paying someone else to fix my faulty electronics for me, the link is here for anyone who is interested: https://tinyurl.com/y7224he9
