Why does iPhone 5 charge to 100% then not work when disconnected?

I suspect the battery, but not sure. It will charge to 100%, but then when disconnected it almost immediately stops working. Erratic. When left overnight without charging, it may or may not have charge remaining. Or, when left unplugged would not work until plugged in, at which point it might show 100% or 40% or whatever.

Also, could signal strength be part of the problem? Severe problem occurs in relatively remote locations or in airplane.

this is usually signs of a bad battery. it refuses to hold a charge. i would recommend to replace it. The battery run about 20 bucks on amazon and about 10-15 bucks on ebay. When removing the battery be careful with not damaging any other parts of the phone as there are some cables laying under it. i would recommend to watch this video for the full walk through. Possibly. A lower signal strength means that the phone has to work harder to receive data from the source of the signal. In this case it would be the radio towers if I'm correct.
