My iPhone 4 no longer displays EE and dots on top LH corner, only "Searching......." Wifi symbol is present and phone still displays my home network. But won't send or receive calls or text messages. I haven't changed any settings as far as I am aware.

Check to see if you may have turned on the airplane mode. If so uncheck it. To find out how on your phone go to the Internet and type in your phone model and reset airplane mode.

Can you checking Settings > General > About Phone > Scroll down to IMEI and see if the IMEI number is present there?
If not then that is a baseband chip issue. Very rarely restoring the phone may fix it.

Having posted this question the symbols returned again after a week's absence and phone works once more. But uneasy as to why this happened and whether it will again. I have no idea what to do if the problem returns.
