Gallery photos all deleted

I went to look at a picture on my phone and all my photos taken, downloaded, and from FB were just black squares. So I turned my phone off and re-started it. Then when I went to my gallery, all my photos are just gone. If I take a new one it shows up, but my old ones are just all gone.

What happened?? And, is there a way to recover them??
