Intermittent crashes while loading
computer starts but hangs different times as the desktop is loading. Cursor stops moving

Try a safe
(shift)boot and run Applications->Utilities->Disk Utility->Disk First Aid:Repair Permissions (and) Verify Disk.
If you have disk problems you need to boot from an install disk or other machine & run DFA-DU:Repair Disk (or target boot your machine and repair it from a second computer).
Check your free disk space, you need about 20% of HD size for VM and swap (temp) files.
