Software update and disk installation

My Mac that i bought was refurbished it doesn't have some apps and has others apps. i tried to update it but it wont let me. it wont let me download anything i was wondering if i needed someone who knows how to put a disk in it and restart it back to its normal apple settings?

If you have compatible OS X installer disk for your computer, power on the Macbook, hold down ALT(option) key until you see the available partitions, then insert the disk and choose it.

You can do this with a Flash Drive as well as DVD. In this case first you have to download your OS's installer from the App Store. Here's a guide: How to make a bootable OS X 10.11 El Capitan installer drive

Before starting it, make sure you back up your data.
