Water damage, why does phone only work while connected to powersource

Dropped my iphone 3g in the toilet, the iphone works great while connected to a computer or to the charger. Once disconnected it works fine until i stop using it and then it either shuts down or stays in recovery mode. If i plug it back into a powersource the phone works fine again. Also the power button does not work (it wont shut down the phone if i hold it down). Is my phone repairable?

Yes. You need to open and clean the phone thoroughly. Just because it's working now doesn't mean it always will- water leaves residue which shorts circuits. Battery dies pretty much every time. Search for water damage 3g at top of screen for more advice
