Why is my LG tv screen gray

My 32 inch LG TV turns on but the picture is gray and displays a title of needing the original remote to turn off and on. I do not have that remote is there a specific remote to use. Whats wrong?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Julie Taptto the grey is your backlight and that is good. If the comment about the remote is clear and un-distorted, then the issue is that you do not get any signal. You may have to setup your channels etc. For some of the functions on your TV you may need an LG replacement remote. Most of those are available, just let us know what exact model your TV is, so we can try to help you further. Right now it does not sound like anything is going on with your TV other than requiring a remote

Generally all LCD TVs will have a T-Con (timing control board). What you describe here is exactly what you need. In some cases the T-con board is imbedded onto the screen (panel). The old term of picture tube is now called the panel. If this is the case, your TV cannot be repaired, as a new panel would be the price of a new TV. As a servicer, we are asked not to replace the panel. Thanks for asking. Matt of Martins TV Repair.

Update (12/22/2016)

IN SOME CASES THE PROBELM CAN BE AN EEPROM IN THE SIGNAL BOARD. THE VIDEO WILL FREEZ WITH A TV LOGO OR MENU. ONCE AGAIN, NEED A BRAND, MODEL NUMBER AND YEAR OF MANUFACTURE. I MAY BE ABLE TO PIN POINT THE PROBLEM. MATT OF MARTINS TV REPAIR.

@roundrock how did you diagnose the T-con board as a failure possibility from the information available? Which model has the T-con board "imbedded onto the screen"? Teach me a few new things.

As an authorize service center, the diagnosis is common. T-con board will display video.

When T-con board is failing or has failed....the panel will be lit, no video. You will not be able to navigate the menu. In some cases the T-Con is a separate board, sometimes it is in the signal board (the signal board is also called main board). And at worst it may be attached to the panel as a unit, which requires panel replacement. I could tell you more if I had the brand, model number and the year manufactured. Thanks for asking, Matt of Martins TV Repair.

Hi @roundrock

Bit confused here by your comment so hopefully you will also help me to understand.

OP says that there is a message on the screen to use the original remote.

As you say that the TCON is failing or has failed and that therefore there is no video how does the message get there?

You also say that you will not be able to navigate the menu. How does the menu appear if the TCON has failed? Did you mean to say that the menu does not appear either because of the failed TCON board?

Not trying to be clever, just hoping to learn a bit more as I go along.
