My MacBook would turn on some days, wouldn't on another!

Hi!

I purchased my MacBook pro 13" in July 2015, and just after the one year warranty, this incident happened. I had kept the MacBook for charging as only 4% battery was remaining. I switched off charging once it had remained there for about 20-25 minutes, as sometimes it happened that the indicator would be orange and it would keep showing battery 99% until u remove the plug.

I tried to start the machine the next day, I heard the start-up chime and saw the progress bar, but hardly after 10-15%, the screen went blank. I tried that 2-3 times, with the same result. I took it to a local MacBook repair shop where he opened the machine in front of me. The guy told me that the GPU of the device is dead. He showed me that the fan is starting and stopping intermittently. I got the machine back.

Next, I took it to apple service centre, where the machine started normally. The person did a PRAM reset. I brought the device back and restarted it. The date was reset to January 1, 2015. I tried resetting the date, with no luck. The option to manually reset was greyed out, and the automatic date was wrong.

The next day, when I started the machine, the date was also correct. I took the back-up and closed it.

The next day, it did not turn on. And today, it turned on normally. I did the hardware test, and it did not find any error.

Anybody has experienced such a thing earlier, or can suggest what could be possibly wrong?

thanks

Krupal

I remember that the tech guy had opened the back cover, but he did not say that there might be a liquid issue. I also don't remember spilling something.

What I do remember is that the Mac Book did fall down from a height of about 3 feet. Though it did not fall flat on ground, and nothing was damaged. In fact, it worked for 2-3 days after falling down also.

Further, it is working fine from last 2 days. Let us see. I thought there must be some issue with power connection.

I'm not sure if you really have a problem here any more. While you clearly had a power issue it appears the SMC reset may have addressed that. So now every-time to start your system up it's starting, correct?

Just don't let the battery get so low without letting the system recharge. You may want to calibrate your battery every so often so SMC knows more accurately the status of your battery (thats why the SMC reset fixed things).

A reset can also effect other settings. In this case both your Clock & WiFi settings so your systems clock was not correctly set.

Click on the menu bar clock to open the Date & Time preferences. Make sure you have the correct time zone selected, also check to see if the time server setting is enabled if it is then it does require access to the internet to find out what time it is. Your system does have an onboard clock but it needs to be correctly set if not you can see some odd time & date issues. Lastly, check your WiFi settings make sure they are correct.

mmm ...

Well, I think we can say the problems you are having has nothing to do with the battery or the batteries charging logic.

Your comment on the tech telling you you might have a GPU problem is a bit off here if you have a MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2012 model it has an intergraded graphic system (Intel HD Graphics 4000) so I don't see it as your problem.

Did you spill or sit your system in some liquid? The only thing I can think of here is something got wet. If you can pop the bottom cover off and see if you see any corrosion or signs of wetness.

thanks for a prompt reply! i still do have the problem, since the macbook would turn on one day and would not turn on the other day. In fact, it started normally at the service center, without PRAM reset. The guy did PRAM reset just because i told him that the device was not turning on.

OK, Lets double check the battery. Download this little gem of an App: CoconutBattery. Paste a screenshot of the This Battery & History screens after you open it up fully in your question (edit mode).

Good! So the battery its self looks OK from here, But did you have the MacSafe power adapter plugged in? Plug it in and take another snap. Also, lets get a snap of the 'History' section as well (click the icon).

done. Pl check. It says the battery capacity is 94%. I think the battery does not have an issue.

The repair shop person told me that the GPU might be faulty. But if that was the case, the MacBook should not have started at all.
