New battery not charging

I replaced my battery with new. All went well, plugged in charger and apple display went on for a moment and then out. Reconnected the new battery thinking maybe I had not fully connected it. Same result. Reinstalled the old battery and the phone starts as usual and charges and remains on after charger is disconnected. Reinstalled new battery and again no progress. Is this new battery bad? I have left it to charge quite a while 15-20 minutes and still no apple start-up display. If I disconnect the small cable and reconnect it sometimes but generally not, the apple logo will come on, but only for a few moments and then it disappears and that's it. Any ideas?

Probably a faulty battery.

Update,

Ifixit.com sent a new "replacement" battery and that did the trick. Great customer service and response. Once installed the battery showed a 40% charge. Followed packaging advice and allowed the phone to discharge the battery to 10% and then recharge to 100%.

All good at this point.

Faulty battery, buy a new one. Just know your phone is 4 years old and no longer in production, so the batteries aren't either and most likely the ones you buy are cheap knockoffs, or the real deal that haven't been charged in 3-4 years.

Well, I'm not so confident in that idea, since the battery was recently purchased directly from this site.

Then I'd contact iFixit for a replacement then.
