What needs to happen prior to opening device?

1.) Obviously, I know I have to turn off the device. But, sometimes the LCD is completely dead due to damages (all black) so I detach the battery ribbon from the logic board to cut power from the LCD however this results in a really long charge to turn on the phone once repair is finished. Why?

2.) do I tell clients to backup phone prior to repair? If their LCD is dead, can they still do so?

3.) when I took my phone to Apple they told me to turn off "find my iPhone." What does this do and should I ask the same of my clientele?

Why does the Apple Genius Bar turn off Find my iPhone before taking the phone for repair?

Activation Lock was introduced in iOS 8 as a way of preventing stolen devices from being reused by later purchasers. It works like this... Before an installation of iOS is used for the first time (e.g. after software update, or wipe and restart), it has to be "Activated". This involves a secure connection to Apple servers to be established which allows Apple to determine the physical device identity, and to see if that device is associated with a certain Apple ID (and such association is applied by enabling Find My iPhone) or not.

So, in case Apple replace the device with a different one, it makes good sense to disable Find My iPhone before taking the device from you. This achieves the following:

A) Allows them to recycle the device identity (or maybe even main board) if they replace your device,

B) Keeps your list of enrolled devices tidier if they replace your device,

This is what I do since I repair many iPhones. I charge them up if they are flat to the point they at least turn on and have at least 10% charge.

Otherwise I turn off the phone. Open it up, always unplug battery first if possible. For iPhone 5s of course I unplug the home button cable carefully first.

You don't need find my iPhone to be turned off. Also with the backup thing I'm not really sure but that's up to the customer really. If you want to be safe backup the phone for them or get them to backup first before service. But it's up to you what you want to do of course.

I feel like everytime I unplug a battery the phone comes back on and is disabled and says to connect to iTunes.

Because unplugging the battery resets date and time. The phone ends up being disabled for a very long time if the phone was disabled for X amount of time and is usually solved by syncing time via sim card cellular data / connect to iTunes or Wi-FI.

Quite dumb how date and time can't be synced if cellular data and wifi is disabled and while phone is disabled for a long time due to date and time not being synced.
