@corklad I think what you are running up against is a battery issue. Amazingly enough we forget that the batteries in our "smart devices" i.e. cellphones etc are also smart batteries. They do more than just provide the needed power. If those batteries are discharged beyond a certain point ( that point on cellphone batteries is around 2.6V) your regular charging circuit does not recognize the battery. The battery then turns into something like a possum and plays dead. Sometimes, and I do not say it is smart or works all the time, you can wake those batteries up. Use a 9V battery and connect that to the positive and negative connection of the cellphone battery for a few minutes. This will "charge "{ the cellphone battery just above that point of not being recognized. Hope this makes sense.

That's a pretty smart idea. I use something called a 'Apple Battery Fast Charging Activation Test Fixture' basically a charging board that allows you to revive dead batteries that are well under the required voltage in order for it to work properly.

Also useful for charging iPhone 4 and higher batteries too.

@benjamen50 you are using some pretty snazzy tools :-) I am just an old dude in bip overalls and got to use the old fashioned homemade tools ;-)

i changed the u7 chip and this has now solved the problem. i have no idea why it solved.

U7? Interesting . That is the Power Management Voltage Regulator IC. Great that you got it fixed.

Because the charging circuit probably uses a switching mechanism depending on the battery voltage.

I think that when the power goes in from the charging cable to the charging port then to the logic board think of it as two lanes where U7 is the left and U2 is the right.

Before it reaches the two lanes there is a voltage sensor chip that pings the battery to check what battery voltage it is at.

When the battery voltage is too low it routes the circuit to the left lane. But since the IC is damaged on the left lane it is just stuck there doing nothing.

But if the battery voltage is sufficient enough it uses the right lane and charges the battery as the IC on the right lane is functioning properly and allows the circuit to be complete.

This is just my assumption. So take it with a grain of salt.

If it charges battery A but not battery B. Then I think it should be obvious that battery B is at fault.

@corklad - Well trevor. thats why I'm a professional and you're not. Click on my icon.

And you down voted me for trying to help you?

you didnt try to help. you just provided a stupid answer in the hope of getting a bit of credit. if you are a professional and this is genuinly the best addvice you could offer then best to find something new to be a professional at. i am a novice but have now solved this issue. i changed u7 and the phone is charging dead batteries again.

,please troll other post and stay off mine. your professional help is not required as the helpfull info is comming from other non professionals
