iMac won't boot - freeze at Apple logo - graphic card dead?

iMac EMC No.: 2134

Model No.: A1225

Hey guys,

since a few days my iMac won't boot anymore. After pressing the on button it is showing the apple logo and then the loading circle.

I am able to access the screen where I can select the different boot options or the bootable stick I have on via usb. But it does not matter which option I choose, it starts to load, showing the loading circle or a process bar (when trying to boot from UsB) but it freezes after a few minutes.

I also tried to access the BIOS like screen where it shows the booting process, but I wasn't able to read the problem from it.

I then brought the iMac to a local store to check it - they said that the graphic card would be dead and there were no replacement parts available. But I still wonder if this is right because the graphic card seems to be alright as the iMac is showing perfect screen and colours when accessing the hard-dive-choosing screen.

Do you have any advice how I can find out what's wrong with my iMac?

Thank you already in advance.

Best

Marvin

If you are getting a screen the GPU is probably OK (although that is the most common issue on this machine). This sounds more like a hard drive issue.

#1 Try starting up in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key on start up.

  1. 2 Try holding down the Command & R keys and select the repair partition on start up if you have one.

# 3 Let me know your results.

Hello mayer,

Thank you for your answer. I tried to boot in safe mode but after about 1/3 of the big status bar it changes to the round loading circle and gets stuck after about 1 minute. You can see on screenshot 1.

I also tried the CMD + R command, but it would not load anything but the loading circle with the same result as in screenshot 1.

One thing that works is to load the screen where I can select any harddrive via the ALT key on startup. But whatever I choose (Recover hard drive, Bootable USB Drive) it fails to load it. Gets stuck after a few minutes at the status bar at about 3/4.

Does this screen tell us that the graphic card is okay?

Any ideas left on what the problem could be? Or how I could find out?

Thanks for you help!

The screen and therefor the GPU appearing to be working just fine. I would next try that fourth icon in Safe Mode. What appears to be a mavericks system. That failing do the system installation. I do not see a repair partition, so I suspect an incomplete install or an older system on your main drive from before repair partitions were installed. This can also happen when you do a cloned installation. Do you have a backup hard drive with a system on it or another Mac you can use Target Mode with?

Also, please unaccept my answer until your problem is solved.
