My iPod just suddenly died. I can't even recharge it.

My battery was running low but I really don't think that was the problem. It just suddenly stopped working. I tried to recharge it, first with my iMac and then with a USB adapter from a wall outlet. No response. Pushed every button, flipped every switch. Nothing. Had it for years without a serious problem like this. What gives?
