Model M8407 / 550 or 667 MHz G4 processor

28 Questions View all

Can I upgrade CPU and HD (SSD!)?

Would like to increase speed (maxed mem at 1GB) and storage (even SSD!). Is there a CPU upgrade beyond 667MHz for this model? If so, can I get more memory capacity?

Has anyone installed a larger HD or SSD in these things?

Is this even a worthwhile task? A good machine is a terrible thing to waste...

As far as the CPU, the max for your model is 667 MHz, unfortunately. The DVI model goes up to 1 GHz, but requires a LOT of modification to use in your machine (i.e. more cost than the machine).

Actually, there are a number of 2.5 ide(pata) ssd drives. A company by the name of Photofast makes a model that one ebay seller says is MacOsX compatible. You can also find models at DVnation.

These take PATA 2.5" IDE type drives.... so, yes you can install a larger HD in it I think 400GB is the largest I've seen. SSD drives are SATA so, no you can't put one of those in it. you can put a burning DL optical drive in it. I did that to mine. good luck.

As of this moment I believe OWC are making Sandforce based PATA SSDs for older Macs. I'm not sure if it is worth the price tag but I have installed one on my iBook G4 and it does make it much much faster. Its pretty amazing.

If you search eBay for "pata ide ssd" I think you can find plenty, but not too large storage though.
