Why does the screen flicker, freeze or black out?

My MBP will often freeze up, usually after Big pixels or distorted lines start appearing. It will also just go black, and the backlight on the keyboard will come on. Hard restart needed each time. It happens more often when I'm logged in as the system admin as opposed to regular accounts.

Try hooking it up to an external monitor to see if the problem persists. Go under the Apple to about this mac, more info, graphics/displays and tell us the top line chipset. Thanks

It's the ATY,Radeon x1600 chipset. Unfortunately I have no ext. monitor available. I removed the RAM chips one by one (1GB ea) and ran the MBP only to see the same artifacts, green horizontal lines and eventual screen black out or freeze. Further online searches pointed to the Radeon GPU in many other users' MBP's doing the same. Most thought it was overheating. Solutions offered included thermal pasting, cleaning out exhaust vents/fans, increase internal fans RPM, removing the ATY Radeon drivers as well as main logic board replacement.

I vacuumed out the vents in back, installed iStat nano & a fan control syspref. So far the lines have not returned. It did freeze once when I had about 8 different windows open from about five apps running (including the movie Star Trek in iTunes) and using Exposé to jump  apps/windows. Am still fiddling with it, but going from constant lockups to one freeze  all day seems to be an improvement.  I think the fans are running at approx 4000+ RPM now.
